Why Exfoliate? All About Skin Exfoliation

We all dream of having flawless, glowing skin. Some people are successful, while others continually struggle to keep their skin looking good. Is there a way to eliminate clogged pores, pimples, breakouts? The answer is yes! Using an exfoliant could be the solution to your problems!
What Is Exfoliation?
The skin is constantly regenerating, and new skin cells push out older cells on the skin’s surface. Some will fall off naturally, but others can accumulate on the surface of the skin. Exfoliation is used to remove dead skin cells and restore your skin’s radiance!
Why Exfoliate?
Whether it’s summer or winter, using a good exfoliant is an excellent solution to help remove dead skin. An exfoliant, especially a natural exfoliant, provides many benefits :
1. Removes Dead Skin from Your Face and Body
The skin, being the largest organ in the body, is constantly regenerating itself by creating new cells (in the dermis). As these cells form, they push the dead cells to the surface (the epidermis). Some of these cells will fall off naturally, while others cling to the skin’s pores and can cause pimples and other skin problems.
2. Optimize Your Moisturizing Results
Regular exfoliation also allows your daily moisturizers to be well absorbed, enabling the active ingredients in your beauty products to penetrate the epidermis for better results and radiant skin. Your skin will be softer, better oxygenated and therefore look healthier!
3. Natural Cycle that Slows Down with Age
The skin has its own cell renewal cycle, which slows down with age and causes dead cells to accumulate. The skin’s texture thickens and the complexion becomes duller, highlighting imperfections such as wrinkles and dark spots. Since exfoliation promotes better skin regeneration, a good skin care routine can make a big difference in the overall radiance and appearance of the skin.
Pravi’s Advice When Buying an Exfoliant
Sensitive Skins Beware!
A gentle exfoliant is preferable, especially for people with sensitive skin, rosacea or eczema. To avoid irritating sensitive skin, it is important to exfoliate gently and in small circles, without applying too much pressure. We want to remove the dead cells, not the new skin underneath!
Always Look at the Ingredients!
We would never recommend a skin care product without telling you about potentially harmful ingredients. Avoid exfoliants that contain microbeads, as they are made of plastic and are very polluting, as well as exfoliants that are very chemical.
Instead, choose a product that contains a gentle, natural exfoliating agent. The top 12 toxic ingredient rule still holds true here! Try exfoliating with our new face and body products, you won’t be disappointed!
How to Use an Exfoliant?
As we know, the purpose of an exfoliant is to remove the cells (dead skin) that accumulate on the surface of the epidermis. The goal is to have a youthful and radiant looking skin, so it is very important to exfoliate the proper way to avoid damaging it.
Here are the steps to follow when exfoliating with Pravi products. There are two types of exfoliants: one for the face and one for the body. For both face and body, it is important not to leave it on the skin for too long!
Body Exfoliation
The skin on your body and your face is very different, and it’s important to use the right products. Natural body scrubs are usually very simple to use! Here are the steps to follow:
- Wet the skin lightly so that it is moist;
- Massage the body scrub onto your skin using circular motions. Pay special attention to rougher areas such as elbows, knees and feet;
- After massaging the scrub, rinse well with cold water (cold water helps close the pores of the skin);
- Gently pat dry with a towel;
We recommend applying a moisturizer afterwards for best results!
Facial Exfoliation
Facial exfoliants are more gentle and delicate than body scrubs to protect more fragile skin. We strongly recommend that you avoid using body scrubs on your face. Here are the steps to follow:
- Put a pea-sized amount of exfoliant on your fingertips;
- Apply a generous layer to your face;
- Let it sit for 30 seconds to a minute;
- Gently massage the skin;
- Rinse with warm water;
Once again, moisturizer is an exfoliant’s best friend! Exfoliate and then use the moisturizer of your choice.
How Often Should You Use an Exfoliating Product?
Exfoliating your skin is great for preventing dead skin buildups and avoiding clogged pores, oil buildup and aging skin. However, overdoing it can be detrimental to the health of your skin!
Excessive exfoliation or scrubbing can have the opposite effect, irritating the skin and drying it out! We have seen many people experience negative impacts of excessive exfoliation (with all the best intentions in the world). Pravi recommends that you exfoliate once a week to keep your skin looking its best!
When to Exfoliate?
You should exfoliate in the evening since your skin is more active at night and regenerates while you rest! Use your exfoliant after cleansing your face and before applying a mask or moisturizer.
